pH Adjusted to Treat Breakouts and Blemishes

The pH of normal, healthy human skin is somewhere between 4.5 and 6 and it’s critically important to maintain skin in a slightly acidic state with a pH of around 5.5. Because pH of the skin is one of the major contributors to acne and other skin problems, you need an acne treatment that adjusts skin pH to fight acne bacteria. There is solid data that confirms that males have a higher pH (alkaline) level than females, so pH adjustment is critical and must be a consideration in products designed to treat breakouts and blemishes.

CTRL® offers a gender-specific design with pH adjustment to address the needs unique differences in male and female skin.

  • Males tend to have a higher skin surface pH than females, creating an environment that can lead to  bacteria over-growth
  • Females experience the opposite problem, they tend to have a more acidic skin surface or lower pH level than males, this may lead to dry, irritated and inflamed skin.

Facts about pH

P. acnes normally lives on the skin and a normal bacteria found in all persons regardless of the presence or absence of acne. However, in individuals prone to acne, the number of P. acnes greatly increases. The growth of bacteria is impacted by skin pH.

At puberty, bodies produce more hair. Hair follicles have associated sebaceous glands which become active as hair growth increases, causing changes in the skin’s pH. The hormones that control sweat also become active and the whole surface of a teenager’s skin differs from that of a young child. This is the body’s way of increasing our defense system.
